KUCHING: Malaysia would lose its competitive edge as the world’s supplier of natural rubber (NR) gloves if a higher price scheme is factored in, as the cost differential between NR and synthetic rubber (SR) has narrowed and consumers are able to switch from NR gloves to SR gloves easily.

However, a research affiliate of Deutsche Bank (Malaysia) Bhd stated the barriers of entry into the glove industry remained high. Besides the need to have economies of scale and proximity to the raw material sources, technological efficiency and a strong customer base are just some of the key factors for successful operations.

For the record, Top Glove Corporation Bhd (Top Glove) and Supermax Corporation Bhd (Supermax) had a customer count of more than 800 customers in over 150 countries. No one customer accounts for more than three per cent of their total sales. (full article)
